On St. Patrick’s Day

Having married into a half-Irish family, St. Patrick’s Day now has a deeper meaning to me than shamrocks, leprechauns, and wearing green to avoid getting pinched. It now evokes the 40 shades of green (and grey) of the Emerald Isle. Warm welcomes and hearty feasts. Brown bread. The Book of Kells. Joan Walsh’s chronicle of how Irish Americans became white. Irish admiration of Frederick Douglass. And of course, my beloved late mother-in-law, whose Irish eyes will always smile in my memory. Slainthe!
