Super proud (to be a trustee) of the Oakland Museum of CA! Here at a sneak peek of the latest exhibition, Queer California: Untold Stories. I’ve had a mixed relationship with “queer” as a descriptor for LGBTQ+ people. I personally prefer the more powerful package of “Black Gay Man”, an identity forged in the era of Tongues Untied and Brother to Brother. Yet lately I’ve wondered if I’m too mainstream and middle class and middle aged (I’ll fully resist wearing argyle though). “Queer” signifies a subversion of the expected, the bland, the norm, and the everyday. In that respect, I’ll always identify, perhaps quietly, with queerness.
Check out Queer California, among all the other OMCA fabulosity, through August 11, 2019!
